Exploring the various intersections of your identity
Vanessa, she/her, 23, TX
The way that the multiple parts of ourselves make up who we are and influence our experiences is often called intersectionality. Intersectionality was first introduced by Black feminists in the 1960βs and 1970βs, and most notably written about by legal scholar, Kimberle Crenshaw.
Intersectionality acknowledges the reality that our multiple identities co-existβand we also may experience stigma or discrimination based on these identities. And while there may be more stigma faced by people with multiple marginalized identities there can also be opportunities for resilience.
In this activity, identify the various elements of your identity, and read about the intersections others hold as well.
